Kartari yoga or dosh is a condition formed in a horoscope when a planet or house is hemmed between two natural benefic planets (shub kartari Yoga) or two natural malefic planets (paap kartari yoga). Kartari means the scissors and this planetary formation denotes a house or planet getting trapped (in case of paap kartari) or shielded (in case of shub kartari) between the planets.
Shub kartari yoga enhances the qualities of a house or a planet in that house. Imagine yourself living in the middle of two good neighbours and the happiness, ease of life, support and secure feel you will get. The same situation arises when a shub kartari yoga is formed in the horoscope. This yoga is formed when a natural benefic like Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or Moon (Mercury and Moon should be benefic for the particular horoscope) is present in 12th and 2nd house to the Rashi we are analysing. This yoga works for the house and planet it is influencing and the matters related to that house, Rashi sign and planet will get an extra support. In real life, the person will experience less effort and increased fortune related to that house’s matters.
Paap kartari, on the other hand, is formed by two malefic planets like Saturn, Sun, Mars, Rahu or Ketu. When any of these planets are posited in 12th or 2nd house to the Rashi in question, then paap kartari yoga is formed. This will create challenges, hurdles, delays and troubles to the matters related to the specific house or planet it is affecting. As you know most of the unfavourable yoga like Guru-Chandal, Angarak or Shrapit yogas are changing their characters in this kali yuga as in this modern illusionary materialistic world, every action needs higher tactics, hardworking, competitive skills and courage that Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Sun are better capable to do. So nowadays, paap kartari yoga is a trainer for a challenging situation like a person who undergoes commando training.

There are some important points to note while judging the Kartari yoga in a horoscope. A shub kartari yoga is not fully formed if any of the planet or the Rashi sign in the middle is getting a malefic aspect or if these planets are in conjunction with another malefic. Similarly, if a natural benefic planet aspects the paap kartari forming planets or Rashi sign in the middle, then the negative effects of this yoga are considerably diminished or nullified.
If the Sun or Saturn (only for Leo or Capricorn ascendants) becomes the Lagna lord, then it is not considered malefic; instead, these planets will be benefic in nature.
For Cancer or Leo Ascendants, Mars is Yoga Karaka planet and cannot be a malefic for that horoscope.
For Taurus or Libra Ascendants, Saturn is Yoga Karaka planet and cannot be a malefic for that horoscope.
In the above three cases, even if a paap kartari is formed with these planets, the eventual outcome will be auspicious after some initial struggles.

When a person is having such a combination in their chart are said to have accumulated some bad karma in their past life which they have to identify and correct in the present life. Something like a snake shedding its old skin and growing a new one.
